Jumpin' Drylands
Photo Gallery Photo Gallery by Refuge Reporter

The desert may seem still a quiet land of rocks and guarded plants very different from the twittering hum of the forest, or the lapping murmur of the shore. But it is alive with many different birds, mammals, reptiles and insects. Thing is, they come out or night, or hide under rocks, or dash about in solitude. The harsh severity of the climate invites dispersal rather than grouping. And silence rather than raucousness. These are images of dryland creatures photographed singly and on the sly. They evoke life in the rugged terrain of the American southwest, where things are jumping. Just not all at once.
