Wind Cave National Park Guide: Scenic Drives
Wind Cave National Park Highlights
- The landscape surrounding Highway 385 as it enters Wind Cave National Park is still pretty barren, but pull over at the junction with the visitor center road to see a prairie dog town on the east side of the road, part of the stretch of prairie known as Bison Flats.
- The rugged Rankin Ridge slices the skyline to your east as you drive north along Highway 87. Get a closer look on the mile-long interpretive trail that starts five miles north of the road's junction with Highway 385. Climb the trail's firetower to take in most of the Black Hills with a glance.
- Drive the "V"-shaped backroads of Highways 5 and 6 in the eastern portion of Wind Cave to take a tour through buffalo country. Recreational vehicles are advised to steer clear of these occasionally gnarly county roads.
- Pull over at the Boland Ridge trailhead, less than a mile north of the junction of Highways 5 and 6. A half-mile out, the somewhat steep trail (an old, unused road) tops out on the Boland Ridge, and on a clear day, you can peer east into Badlands National Park.
