Wasatch-Cache National Forests Guide: Hiking and Backpacking
Wasatch-Cache National Forests Highlights
- Mineral Fork Trail, a former mining road, climbs to a glacial cirque above Big Cottonwood Canyon. You’ll pass waterfalls, alpine meadows, and old mines in ten miles round-trip with a 3,520-foot elevation change.
- Hike as far as you like on Brighton Lakes Trail in upper Big Cottonwood Canyon. The trail takes you through some of the prettiest lake country in the range. It’s a popular family outing.
- White Pine, Red Pine, and Maybird Gulch trails begin at the same trailhead in Little Cottonwood Canyon then branch off into separate valleys. Each trail boasts pretty alpine lakes.
- Cecret Lake Trail begins on the west side of Albion Basin Campground in upper Little Cottonwood Canyon and climbs to the lake in just two miles round-trip; elevation gain is 360 feet.
- All of the Big and Little Cottonwood canyons lie within a watershed. Authorities are strict about the no dogs rule. Also there’s no swimming or washing allowed in any water source; backcountry campers must pitch at least 200 feet away.
