One of the states premier bird-watching and loon-breeding areas, Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge is also a great place to paddle. From the cockpit of your kayak, you can view such species as bald eagles, peregrine falcons, osprey, and northern harriers in this northern New Hampshire refuge.

Lake Francis State Park, just north of Pittsburg, New Hampshire, offers camping, moose viewing, cold-water fishing, and canoeing on a 38-acre lake. The boat launch is in the day-use section of the park's campground, and serenity is only a few paddle strokes away.

Beginning in Conway, New Hampshire, and traveling southeast through Maine is the glorious Saco River. Views of the Presidential Range begin the trip, Maine's rocky Atlantic coast end this glorious run, and cold, clear waters stay with you the whole ride.
