Voyageurs National Park

Hiking

Trails are maintained for hiking and, in winter cross-country skiing. Trailheads for hiking trails can be reached by boat. The Park has 32 miles of maintained hiking trails. The longest, Cruiser Lake Trail, traverses nine miles of Kabetogama Lake's Lost Bay to Rainy Lake's Anderson Bay. Seven lakes are found along this trail and its spurs. Numerous campsites make this the best backpacking trail in the park. Overlooks of lakes and beaver ponds, a variety of plant communities, and the chance to hear the slap of a beaver's tail on the water or the flash of a whitetail's flag all provide excitement for the hiker.

In the southeast corner of the park, the Mukooda trail begins on the west shore of Mukooda Lake. This 11-mile trail provides outstanding view of Staege Bay. The many portage trails from the major lakes (Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand Point) into the smaller lakes provide further hiking opportunities. Although short, these trails cover beautiful country and give access to scenic fishing lakes.

The Black Bay Ski Trail, located in the northwest corner of the park, is 11 miles long and offers good hiking, even though there are a few low, wet areas. Bring your waterproof boots for this one!
