Go Caving in a Peak District Park

Cavers are a strange breed, spending their days in deep darkness, amid the sound of dripping water and the acrid smell of bat's urine. But for those who share this passion, the labyrinth of limestone fissures that lie below the Peak District National Park of Derbyshire are a subterranean paradise. If you suffer from real claustrophobia don't even consider this, for even the easy caving routes involve tight squeezes, twisting tunnels too narrow to turn around in, and chokes where boulders fallen across the way. Experienced spelunkers, for whom this is old hat, can take classes in specialized skills such as pitch-rigging (setting up ropes for climbs and abseils), rescue, and route-finding.
