Jud Wiebe Trail Practicalities

Built as a joint project by the town of Telluride and the USFS in 1987, this short but steep trail was named after Jud Wiebe, who designed it before passing away in 1986.
This popular trail makes a 2.7-mile loop from Aspen Street to Oak Street in Telluride. From the trailhead it crosses Cornet Creek before climbing up an old road grade across the front hillside, switchbacking up through the aspens to a signed trail junction near Butcher Creek. The trail to the left is a new extension of the Deep Creek Trail, which follows an old waterline after passing through Epees Park. The Jud Wiebe trail goes right at the junction, heading steeply east up the ridge to top out at about 10,200 feet. Then it contours around the south-facing hillside, providing views of town, Bridal Veil Falls, and the ski area. The trail then switchbacks down through the aspens to a bridged crossing of Cornet Creek. From there it climbs up to Liberty Bell flats and a junction with Liberty Bell Road. The trail follows the road to the right and down steep loose rock switchbacks by the town waterplant. Then it reaches a junction with Tomboy road, where hikers should turn right to return to town.
Access: Turn north from Colorado Avenue onto Aspen Street. Go three blocks up to the trailhead.
