This trail system is partially within the first pine plantation on the Superior National Forest, covering 120 acres. The plantation was planted in 1915 and has been thinned out in recent years. While touring the area, you may see white paint on some of the trees. These mark out research plots to study growth of the trees that remained after the logging operation. The area east of Forest Road 131 is generally quite flat. Those areas west are more challenging but still relatively easy. Gentle rolling hills characterize this area. Enjoy your ski through the red pine forest. This system is user tracked and maintained by volunteers.

Location: Birch Lake Plantation is located 17 miles south of Ely. From Ely take County Road 21 south for 15 miles. Turn left on County Road 70 and travel 2 miles to County Road 623 (through Babbitt). The trail area is located 1 mile east of Babbitt. The parking area is along County Road 623, east of Forest Road 131.
