Stanislaus National Forest

Around the Forest

Just south of Stanislaus, you'll find Yosemite National Park—1,200 square miles of wilderness set aside in 1890 to preserve the central Sierra Nevada. Here, you can wander through the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias—with nearly 500 trees, it is the largest sequoia grove in the park.

Nearby national forests include El Dorado, Toiyabe, Sierra, and the Inyo. The former mining town of Sonora, with its population of 5,000, sits just outside the forest's western border and offers ample lodging and a variety of restaurants. Sonora is situated 300 miles southeast of Los Angeles and 300 miles southwest of Las Vegas. Stockton and Modesto are about 60 miles east of the forest. Other nearby towns include Arnold, Mi-Wuk Village, Jamestown, and Twain Harte.
