GENERAL INFORMATION
The Mad River Ranger District offers a fresh mountain environment with excellent fishing, boating, camping and hunting. We have a beautiful forest with spectacular views, wilderness lands, hiking trails and firewood cutting areas.
While visiting, take the time to listen to the music provided by the variety of birds native to our area. Try hiking through a stand of virgin timber without startling a herd of deer or a covey of quail. Experience a record size trout tugging on your fishing pole either on the Mad River, Van Duzen River or Ruth Lake. Watch bald and golden eagles, peregrine falcons, ospreys, goshawks and redtail hawks. Troll for bass or water ski on Ruth Lake. Gaze at a billion stars and galaxies through a clear atmosphere while listening to a spotted owl in the distance. Reserve an entire campground or just one loop at Fir Cove for you and your friends to discover the beauty of our forest.
The Mad River Ranger District is located 48 miles East of Highway 101 on Highway 36. Coming from interstate 5 at Red Bluff we're 99 miles due west on Highway 36.
