Rogue River - Siskiyou National Forest Highlights

  • Running deep and strong through southern Oregon's Siskiyou mountains, the Rogue River's exceptional fishing, abundant wildlife, beautiful scenery, and interesting history inspired Congress to christen it a Wild and Scenic River in 1967, and the fishing is still great today.
  • Autumn Steelhead are between one and two feet in length and weigh up to eight pounds. Chinook Salmon up to 40 pounds have been known to bite along with Silver Salmon up to 12 pounds.
  • Rogue Excursions is one of the most renowned Rogue River guiding services. Signing up with guides who know the river and its fish makes a wilderness fishing experience on this driftboat fishery feasible and fun.
  • The Rogue boasts a fly-fishing-only tailwater that offers year-round angling for resident rainbows, which grow to five pounds or more.
  • The 33-mile Wild Rogue section, running from Grave Creek to Foster Bar, thrives with wildlife. Between casts, watch for bears, otters, deer, Bald Eagles, herons, kingfishers, and mink.
  • Camping is available along the north bank. You have to access it by trail since there is no road access. Fly-fishing this section can be good, but pick your water carefully; usually it is either too fast or slow, and river traffic can interfere.

An Oregon State Fishing License is required if you plan on fishing within the National Forest. These can be purchased at any sporting goods store in the Grants Pass area. Prices for an Out-of-State License vary depending on how many days you plan to fish and the type of fish you hope to land, specifically salmon, steelhead, or trout.

Most of the lakes on the Siskiyou National Forest are stocked with Cutthroat, Rainbow, or Brown Trout. Steelhead season runs from January to mid-March and salmon season runs from mid-April until mid-July on the Rogue River. Popular fishing areas include Bolan Lake, the Chetco River near Brookings, the mouth of the Rogue River at Gold Beach, and the Elk and Sixes River just north of Port Orford.
