Shoshone National Forest

The Shoshone's 1,528 miles of roads take visitors on journeys of magnificent discovery:

• US 26/287 northwest from Riverton passes through the Shoshone in the Wind River valley between the rugged Absaroka Range and the massive Wind River Range. From the valley it climbs over Togwotee Pass and down to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

• US 14/16/20 west from Cody to Yellowstone National Park follows the North Fork of the Shoshone River through the Absaroka Mountains to the East Entrance. Formerly the North Fork Scenic Byway, this stretch of road was redesignated the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway in 1996. Teddy Roosevelt called it the most scenic 52 miles in the United States.

• US 212, the beautiful, winding Beartooth Scenic Byway travels from Red Lodge, Montana, through the northern portion of the Shoshone National Forest and into the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park. This road, one of the highest in the country, is closed by heavy snows in winter.

• WY 296, north from Cody, follows a portion of the historic Nez Perce Trail and connects Cody with US 212. Designated as the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway in 1989, this recently reconstructed and paved state highway crosses the spectacular Dead Indian Pass and affords the only view into the canyon of the Clarks Fork Wild River, Wyoming's only Wild & Scenic River.
