Atwell Mill Campground
Having to drive 19 miles on a twisty, narrow road that drops off dramatically on one side pretty much assures you a certain degree of solitude. Atwell Mill is the more convenient of Mineral King's two campgrounds, but it still rarely reaches its 21-site capacity, even on mid-summer weekends. Perks include easy access to an isolated trail that crosses the Kaweah River and cuts through gorgeous groves. Open May through September.
Cold Springs Campground
Slightly larger than its neighborhood counterpart, Cold Springs is just as pleasant a place to hunker down for a night or two under the stars. Well-spaced sites stretch out beside the river (#18 is my favorite), and walk-in sites offer an even more thorough escape from humanity. Best of all, trails climbing to several backcountry lakes start just down the road. Open May through September (weather permitting).
