WEATHER
The Sierran foothills (1,000 to 4,000 feet) are characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Precipitation usually occurs from January to mid-May; rain in the summer is rare. Average rainfall is about 26". During the winter, low-hanging clouds often drift in from the west, obscuring the countryside for several days at a time.
Summer in the middle elevations (4,000 to 7,000 feet) is characterized by warm days and cool evenings. These elevations receive an average of 40 to 45" of precipitation annually. Much of this falls during the winter, resulting in a deep blanket of snow from December to May. Sub-zero temperatures, however, are rare. In the summer, occasional afternoon thundershowers may occur.
Summer temperatures in Cedar Grove are generally hotter than the average for the middle elevations. Midsummer temperatures may reach the 90s. Cedar Grove is closed in the winter due to hazardous road conditions.
TRANSPORTATION
Vehicle access is by Highway 180 into Kings Canyon, or Highway 198 into Sequoia. The Generals Highway connects the two, making loop trips possible. There is no road access from Highway 395 on the parks' east side. Public transportation to the parks is limited to small tour companies outside the parks. Air, bus, Amtrak, and rental cars are available in Fresno and Visalia.
Winter - Entry roads are kept open to Grant Grove and to Giant Forest-Lodgepole, but may be closed temporarily for plowing. Tire chains may be required at any time. The Generals Highway between Lodgepole and Grant Grove is kept open as conditions permit; it is usually closed during heavy storms. Visitor centers are open at Ash Mountain, Lodgepole, and Grant Grove.
