Attractions And Considerations: This trail is the abandoned route of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad spur that served the Monarch limestone quarry west of Garfield. The Railroad was abandoned and the rails and ties removed in 1986. The grade rises at a steady 4 percent, making an easy climb for mountain bikes. The tread is a little rough and soft for thin tires and is recommended only for mountain bikes or hiking and horseback. A short section at the switchbacks at Garfield may be used by autos. The RR grade continuing east from the Colorado Trail enters private land east of Cree Creek and is not a public Right of Way beyond the Creek as is shown on the map. Take your time and enjoy the excellent views.
Special Considerations: This is an excellent scenic trail for beginning mountain bikers or those out for an easy trip to enjoy the beautiful views. The easy grade is great for the whole family to enjoy. The connecting Colorado Trail may be used by mountain bicyclers although the grade is quite steep as it continues to the north. Motorized vehicles are not permitted on this trail.
