San Bernardino National Forest
The San Bernardino National Forest offers hundreds of miles of scenic roads where travelers can enjoy vistas of breathtaking mountain scenery and sprawling deserts.
The Rim of the World National Scenic Byway, part of the National Scenic Byway system, starts at the San Gorgonio Ranger District, leads to Highway 18 in Big Bear, continues to Highway 138 at Crestline, and ends in Cajon Pass at Mormon Rocks. A self-guiding auto tour guide for this route is available at all Ranger Stations.
The Palms to Pines National Scenic Byway starts on Highway 243 in Banning, leads to the scenic mountain village of Idyllwild, continues on Highway 74 through Garner Valley, and ends in Palm Desert. The 67-mile route in the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains travels from desert oasis to snow-peaked mountains. The Indian Vista Overlook and Cahuilla Tewanet Overlook are two popular stopping points along the route.
For the historically-minded, the self-guided Gold Fever Tour takes you through the tumultuous history of gold mining in the area near Big Bear Ranger Station.
