San Bernardino National Forest

Mountain Biking

Mountain bike riding is a fast-growing sport in the mountains. Riding is permitted on any non-private dirt road and on most trails except the Pacific Crest Trail, short nature trails, and any trail leading to or inside the five designated wilderness areas. GORP's San Bernardino hiking page will lead you to scores of trails also available to bicyclists.

The three most popular areas within the national forest are north of Big Bear Lake (Fawnskin to Holcomb Valley), Snow Summit and Snow Valley ski areas with chair lifts fitted to carry bicycles, and the Santa Ana River area between South Fork Campground and Angelus Oaks.

Challenging routes can be found for all skill levels but the more spectacular rides are best attempted by the experienced cyclist. Route information is available from each of the Ranger Stations and in the book Mountain Biking in the San Bernardinos.
