Lacul Rosu
The Red Lake was born from a tectonic cataclysm in the summer of 1837a rock from the Hasmas mountain collapsed and dammed the water way. From the purple mirror of the lake (reflecting the surrounding rocky walls) here and there pop out petrified remains of the former forest of trees. Together with Cheile, Bicazului nearby, Lacul Rosu forms a natural reserve of 5,260 acres.
Slanic
Salt mountain, one vestige of the Mesozoic, aerial spur of the salt-gema underground deposit (specific flora); lakes with chlorosodium sulphate and calcium waters; in the salt mine, salt sculptures. Access: the town and spa of Slanic (Prahova).
Piatra Neamt
On the heights of Cozla, Pietricica and Cemegura-one of the most important deposits of marine fossil fauna of the country;"the Bear's Basins" (wind erosion in gritstone). Access: the town of Piatra Neamt.
Campulung Moldovenesc
At the foot of the Rarau mountains on the northern side of the Eastern Carpathians: Pietrele Doamnei (calcareous rocks over 70 meters high with fossils of the Secondary age sea); Slatioara (600 hectares, 50-meter high trees 400-500 years old). Access: the town of Campulung Moldovenesc.
Bicaz Gorges
Karst complex (Bicajel-Sugau included) in mid area of the Eastern Carpathians: five-km long, 300 meter high walls, more than 300 flower species; difficult routes for mountaineers; caves. Access: towns of Bicaz and Gheorghieni.
Bistrita Gorges
Dug by the river bearing the same name in the western part of the Southern Carpathians. Karst formation (the Cave of the Bats), interesting plant and wildlife. Access: the commune of Costesti (Valcea).
Dambovita, Carasului, Zugreni Passes
Deep faults cut into the rocks of the Carpathians by the rivers bearing the same names. Karst phenomena; flora specific to gorges, cavern fauna.
Jiu Pass
Spectacular mountain pass on the western side of the Southern Carpathians. Some 25 kilometers of gorges (railway and road, 43 tunnels, viaducts, bridges and footbridges). Rare plant and wildlife. Access: towns of Targu Jiu and Petrosani.
