Classic Adventures: Raft the Grand Canyon
By Tyler Williams
Mind-blowing geology, spectacular side hikes, and world-famous whitewater make a Grand Canyon river trip the ultimate Arizona adventure. To traverse the entire 277-mile canyon in a non-motorized raft, dory, or kayak takes from 12 to 21 days depending on the amount of time spent off the river. Take your time: The off-river hours can be some of the most memorable, including hikes to pueblo ruins and hidden waterfalls not accessible from the rim. On the river you'll run enormous Class IV white water, where anything can happen. Some of the most chaotic rapids are Hance, Granite, and the grand daddy, Lava Falls. Just plan ahead—waiting lists to get on a trip can be two years or more.
