Prince William Forest Park

Biking

Prince William Forest Park, a National Park Service site, offers the novice and serious cyclist an excellent opportunity for cycling. The park represents a fine example of an eastern deciduous Piedmont forest. You may even be able to catch a glimpse of wildlife during your travels.

Paved Roads

Scenic Loop
The scenic drive from Pine Grove Picnic Area to the beginning of the Scenic Loop is 2 miles, and is recommended only for the most serious cyclist due to the number of steep grades and blind curves. The Scenic Loop is approximately 8.5 miles around and is accessible from a number of parking areas.

The drive beginning at parking lot D towards the Oak Ridge Campground is one way for vehicles. The inside left lane is reserved for bicycles.

The north side of the loop from parking lot D to lot H is relatively moderate. Beyond the Oak Ridge Campground turn-off the road again becomes two-way, so please stay single file to the right. Between lots H and I on the south side there are approximately 2 miles of steep areas that may not be suitable for youngsters and novices.

Unpaved Roads
Riding on park trails is prohibited. The unpaved roads are rather wide and are dirt and gravel covered. They offer an interesting alternative to the paved roads.

Old Black Top Road
From Turkey Run Parking area to lot F is approximately 1.5 miles and is moderate. The intersection of Taylor Farm Road is 0.5 miles from the parking lot.

Taylor Farm Road

Mawavi Road
From Lot G to Route 619 is 2 miles and is moderate except for about a 0.4-mile section that is steep just north of the bridge over South Quantico Creek.

Burma Road
This road running north from the Scenic Drive to just beyond the low water crossing at Quantico Creek is 0.6 of a mile, has a slight grade, and is easy. Heading east 0.8 of a mile towards Route 234 are a series of hills making this section moderately difficult.

Pyrite Mine Road
From lot D to the North Valley Trail is about 1 mile and is moderate except for a 0.4-mile section near the end which is steep. You cannot enter onto the North or South Valley trails at this point.

North Orenda Road
From lot D to the South Valley Trail is about 1.1 miles and is moderate. Please walk your bicycle across the bridge to connect up with the South Orenda Road.

South Orenda Road
From the bridge connection with the North Orenda to the Pine Grove Forest Trail is 0.5 miles and moderate. Walk your bicycle up the concrete trail to the parking lot and Visitor Center.
