Ohio's only national park is a beautiful strip of land running through the Cuyahoga Valley along the historic route of the Ohio & Erie Canal. But it's extremely popular, too—nearly three million people spill in every year from nearby Akron and Cleveland. Ditch the masses for some of the state's other, more remote playgrounds including Shawnee State Park on the Kentucky border, surrounded by 63,000 acres of Appalachian foothills rolling one after another toward the horizon. The so-called "Little Smokies of Ohio" have 60 miles of backpacking on 8,000 acres of untouched wilderness along the Ohio River. Deep hollows filled with hardwoods like oak and hickory put on a fantastic show of fall foliage, best seen in mid-October.
