Prime Paddling on the Colorado

Practicalities
  • For a list of tour operators running trips on the Colorado see GORPtravel Southwest Paddling.
  • The Utah River Forecast Center issues daily reports on river levels throughout the state, (801) 539-1311.
  • Permits are not required to float Ruby and Horsethief Canyons between Loma, Colorado, and the Westwater launch site in Utah. For more information and river regulations, contact:

Permits are required to float the 17 miles of technical whitewater from the Westwater Ranger Station to Cisco Landing. Lottery applications for a given year are accepted starting the first business day of January. For information, contact:

Permits are not required to float between Cisco Landing and Potash. The river is monitored by the Bureau of Land Management. For information and river regulations, contact:

Permits are required to float the 70 miles of Cataract Canyon from Potash to Lake Powell. The float includes 20 miles of the biggest whitewater upstream of the Grand Canyon. Applications are accepted for a given year starting the first business day in January. For information, contact:
