The color change in Arkansas begins in early October in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas and moves slowly to the south, where it reaches its peak in late October and early November. Yellows, reds, oranges, golds—even deep purple—overtake the maples, sumac, sweetgum, oak, sassafras, and hickory.
There are three periods of peak color in Arkansas, depending on what region of the state you're in.
Area One: The Ozark Mountain region begins its color change in late September or early October with the blackgums taking on brilliant red tones. Other hardwoods common to the Ozarks, such as maples, hickories, and oaks, are generally most colorful during the last half of October.
Area Two: The Ouachitas take on their color within a week or so following the Ozarks, usually in late October or early November.
Area Three: The Delta (east) and the Gulf Coastal Plain (south) are usually transformed by late October to mid-November.
