Ouachita National Forest

The Winding Stair Equestrian Trail begins at the Cedar Lake Equestrian Camp. The trail forms a network of loops with different lengths so that riders can plan their rides according to their abilities and desires. Trails climb mountains, follow creeks, and travel through different forest types.

Other Opportunities: The Cedar Lake Equestrian Camp was built specifically for people bringing their horses. It is an ideal place to begin a day's ride. Day riders can park at the Equestrian Camp or at various trail junctions along the roads. At Cedar Lake Recreation Area there is a 86-acre lake where people can swim at two beaches and fish. The Talimena Scenic Byway that travels the crest of Winding Stair Mountain is just 15 miles away.

Length: 77 miles total; loops enable the rider to plan short or long rides.

Directions: From U.S. Highway 270/59, 3 miles west onto Holson Valley Road. Follow signs to Cedar Lake Recreation Area.

Trail Information: The trails are marked with yellow blazes on the trees and many junctions have maps to show where you are.

Site Amenities: The trails wind through the Ouachita Mountains that are forested with tall pines and beautiful hardwoods.

Safety: Always tell someone where you plan to go and take a flashlight when riding in the afternoon in case you don't get back before dark.

Difficulty Level: Trails vary from easy to most difficult.
