Thru-Hiker's Guide to America

Ouachita Trail Weather
By E. Schlimmer

Excerpted from Thru Hiker's Guide to America by E. Schlimmer

Weather on the Ouachita Trail creates a hiking season that has more in common with that of the Arizona Trail than closer trails of the upper Midwest. But it should be mentioned that winter in the Oklahoma and Arkansas region can be quite cold and flurries may fly when it gets cold enough (but major snowstorms are rare). If you don’t like to hike around in near freezing temperatures, it would be best to wait until after February to tackle the OT. However, it is apparent that the absolute worst time of year to be on the OT is summer. Water becomes an issue, the heat alone can be brutal, and there are thunderstorms.
