Mt. Rose Trail #814 . . . Wilderness trail adopted by volunteer group -- lots of interest Mt. Rose Trail #814 The trail is in the Mt. Skokomish Wilderness and has been adopted by a dedicated volunteer group and thus receives maintenance year round. The trail is extremely steep and is very hard on the legs coming down; please use caution. Some views of Lake Cushman, Prospect Ridge, Dow Mountain, and Lightening Peak, may be seen on the ascent. The trail travels through a quiet, old growth forest and from the ridge loop trail, views of Bear Gulch Valley, Mt. Ellinor, Mt. Washington, Mt. Pershing, and the distant Huckleberry drainage may be seen. Ice axe (when snow is present), good hiking boots and the ten essentials are highly recommended. Fires above 3,000 feet elevation and groups consisting of more than 12 people are prohibited within the wilderness. Location and Access: Travel Highway 101 to Hoodsport. Turn onto State Route 119 and travel 9.0 miles to the junction with F.S. Road #24. Turn left and drive approximately 3.0 miles. Facilities at Trailhead : Small parking area just off of F.S. Road #24, toilet. No potable water. Opportunities: Day hiking, wildlife observation, climbing, and fantastic views at the summit. Level of Difficulty: Most Difficult. Location and Access: Travel Highway 101 to Rd. #2610-010 (Mt. Jupiter Rd.), approximately 22 miles north of Hoodsport. Follow Rd. 2610-010 for 2.5 miles to the junction with Rd. #2610-011 (the left fork). Just north of the intersection is a wildlife gate. This gate is locked from October 1 to May 1 and during times of high fire danger. When the gate is locked you must hike the 011 spur 2.5 miles to the trail and the trailhead. The trail takes off to the left. Road 2610-010 is steep, winding, and can be rough in places. Trailers are not possible under any circumstance due to the rough roads and difficulty in turning around. The road may be difficult to follow in places due to recent logging on State and Private land. Facilities at Trailhead: There is a small parking area (No trailers or R.V.'s). Dry Creek Trail #872
Location and Access: Travel Highway 101 to Hoodsport. Turn onto State Route 119 and travel 9.0 miles to the junction with FS Rd. #24. Turn left and travel 6.0 miles to FS Rd. #2451. Turn left and drive across the causeway over the North Fork Skokomish River. Drive approximately 100 yards and the trailhead will be located on the left side of the road. Facilities at Trailhead : There is a large area on the roadside for parking. The beginning of the trail is gated (private property), so please don't park in front of the gate. There are no facilities at the trailhead. Water and toilets are available at Staircase Campground in the Olympic National Park. Opportunities: Day hiking, backpacking, wildlife observation, and scenery. Mount Muller Trail # #882
The trail rolls and meanders along the ridge top offering spectacular views along the way. Mt. Olympus, Lake Crescent, and the Strait of Juan de fuca are all part of the panoramic views from the trail between Jim's Junction and Mosley Gap. From Mosley Gap (MP 7.4), the trail descends to the valley floor through unique boulder formations, ferns, vine maple, and overhanging moss. The loop trail returns to the trailhead through beautiful stands of maple, Douglas-fir and western hemlock as it parallels Highway 101 for 2.8 miles. The entire loop trail is 12.8 miles in length. Location and Access : Travel Highway 101 to F.S. Road #3071, approximately 24 miles east of Forks and 31 miles west of Port Angeles. Watch for Mount Muller signs on Highway 101. Facilities at Trailhead : Trailhead is located 1/8 mile on the right side of Road #3071 and has toilet, information board and ample parking Nearby stream serves as stock water source. Recommended Season: Spring Summer Fall Winter Caution : Be sure to carry adequate drinking water, and be prepared for bad weather (wind and rain) by carrying rain gear and warm clothing. The flower meadows along the ridge top are very fragile. Please stay on the trail. Tether stock in designated areas only or in the trees below the meadows.
Lower South Fork Olympic Elk (Roosevelt) can be observed throughout the river basin provided one is quiet and does not approach too closely. Location and Access: Located 22 mi. northwest of Shelton in the Skokomish River Recreation Area. Travel Highway 101 to the Skokomish Valley Road 6 mi. north of Shelton, 7 mi. south of Hoodsport. Turn west on the Valley road and drive about 5 mi. to the junction with FS Rd. #23. Turn right and proceed for 9.0 miles to FS road #2353. Turn right onto FS road #2353 and drive 1.0 mile to the trailhead. Facilities at Trailhead: Toilets and potable water are available at Brown Creek Campground. There is parking available for 7 vehicles. There is a horse camp area near Brown Creek Campground. Level of Difficulty: Moderate. Opportunities: Day hiking, Camping, wildlife observation, stock packing, mountain bike riding, wildlife viewing and bird watching are available.
