The Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River National Grassland occupy 959,290 acres surrounding the geographic center of the state of Oregon. The National Forest is noted for its pine forests, while the Grassland is characterized by sagebrush/juniper areas, often referred to as high desert. Both areas have picturesque rimrock vantage points, deep canyons, and other unique geologic landforms. Weather conditions in the summer are typically warm and sunny during the daytime, with cool nights. Frost can and does occur at higher elevations throughout the year.
Walton Lake is a quiet, secluded lake skirted by stands of old-growth ponderosa and mountain meadows. A lakeside campground with 30 campsites makes it an ideal place to bring the family.
Outside of Bend, Oregon, spelunkers can explore the lava tubes at Skeleton Cave, Arnold Ice Caves or Lava River Caves. Just north of Redmond, the medieval rock spires and craggy palisades of Smith Rock State Park lure rock climbers from near and far.
Nearby towns include Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Hines, Paulina, and Madras. Eugene, Oregon is about 115 miles west of Prineville. Portland is about 125 miles northwest of Prineville.
