Old growth and wolves: How much wilder can you get? This may be the largest stand of northern hardwoods in the United States—up to 86,000 acres—all set in an island wilderness on Lake Superior. The island boasts more than 160 miles of trails, and no auto roads. You get there by boat or floatplane. Once there, it's just you, a few hikers and anglers, and a strong population of moose, timber wolves, and beaver.
