The Big Island
TERRAIN: Steep hills, ridge trails, solidified laval flows, soft dirt trails in valleys.
BEST ROUTES: Kilauea Crater Rim Drive, Chain of Craters Road, Waipio Valley Trail, Kumukahi Lighthouse Trail.
GETTING THERE: Start from Kilauea State Park.

IDAHO
Ketchum District, Sawtooth National Forest
TERRAIN: Easy to challenging single track and old jeep and mining roads. Some stretches are quite technical—everything from smooth to rocky through mountain ranges full of lakes, rivers, and streams.
BEST ROUTES: Corral Creek, Adams Gulch, Greenhorn Gultch.
GETTING THERE: Head north from Twin Falls, Idaho, on Idaho 75/US 93 to Ketchum.

NEBRASKA
Nebraska National Forest
TERRAIN: 70 miles of mountain-biking routes through ponderosa pins, canyons, buttes, and streams. Graduated degrees of difficulty; 200 miles of Rail Trails.
BEST ROUTES: Pine Ridge Trail, Bordeaux Creek, Black Hills Overlook Trail.
GETTING THERE: Located 100 miles south of Rapid City. Take Route 79 south to US 385 to Chadron.

NEW MEXICO
Santa Fe National Forest

TERRAIN: Mostly primitive and gravel roads through mountain forests. Steep grades in many areas.
BEST ROUTES: Lower Colonias and Barillas area: Forest Road 83. Rowe Mesa area: State Road 34; Cow Creek area: Forest Road 92; Willow Creek, Elk Mountain: Forest Road 645 to Forest Road 156.
GETTING THERE: Take Highway 285 or I-25 north to Santa Fe.

NORTH CAROLINA
Pisgah and Nantahala National Forest
TERRAIN: Unlimited single track through dense forest. Trails range from rolling to steep and challenging.
BEST ROUTES: Tsali Trail along Fontana Lake has switchbacks, rolling climbs, and banked turns. Also try Swing Bridge Trail Loop along the Little Tennessee River Trail.
GETTING THERE: From Asheville, North Carolina, head south on Blue Ridge Parkway.
