Regional GuideBiking - Monterey
Pedal your way down fir- and ponderosa pine-lined single-track in California's Boggs Mountain State Forest. Numerous trails of varying lengths and ability levels wind through the park. Head 22 miles south of Lakeport to Hoberg and the State Fire Station, where many of the forest's trails begin. Bike Montana de Oro State Park near San Luis Obispo, in the southern end of this region. Head to the Islay Creek Trail for a demanding eight-mile loop that affords views of surrounding Morro Bay and Los Oso Valley, and the area's flower-covered hillsides. For coastal views, head to the Oro State Park's Bluff Trail, a easy, three-mile ride that takes riders over cliffs and affords views of Pacific tidal pools, wildflowers, and, depending on the season, whales. Pedal Monterey's Old Coastal Road. As the 18-mile route just south of Monterey winds its way to the famed Highway One, bikers pass through several distinct changes of landscapefrom dry canyons to lush areas crowded with fern and redwood. Take on Highway One. In several places there will be little between you and the edge of a cliff but the stretch is a gem and the directions are simple: Stick to Highway One.
