Just the Facts
Location: East-central Italy
Nearest town: Ascoli
Favorite activities: Skiing, hiking, climbing, wildlife viewing
Lying along the little-visited east-central coast of Italy, the Sibillini mountains make an extraordinarily scenic setting for a backpacking adventure in a place you can have pretty much all to yourself. The Sibillinis are the abode of porcupines, badgers, hawks, and even a few gray wolves. In winter the eastern edge of the park attracts skiers, who come to well-groomed runs; cross-country fans go to the park's opposite end to the unpopulated Piano Grande, or Great Plain. Camping is permitted everywhere in the park, but there are few services outside of the small towns of Amandola, Norcia, and Sarnano.
