Hiking - Scad Valley Trail

The trail parallels Scad Valley Creek on the west facing slopes of Seeley Mountain and is relatively flat throughout. It is primarily vegetated with sagebrush and grass and passes along the lower edge of Spruce/Fir and Aspen habitat types. The tread is approximately 18 inches wide.

Trail Data

Access: This trail can be traveled from about the first of June through October. It can serve as a connecting trail for loop trips between Horse Canyon Trail #076 and Left Fork of Huntington Creek Trail #131. Approximately 10,000 feet from the trailhead there is a unmarked trail intersecting from upslope that provides access to East Mountain.

Trailhead: On the south edge of Millers Flat Reservoir dam, approximately 32 miles from Huntington, Utah

Length: 3 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Travel Time: 3 hours

Suitability: Trail is suitable for foot, horse, mountain bikes and cross-country skiing.

Trail Ends: At Horse Canyon Trail 1/3 of a mile from Scad Valley Road (Forest development road #014)

Additional Information

Recreational Opportunities: Wildlife that may be encountered include deer, Goshawks, badgers and dippers. Trail use is light throughout the summer and moderate during the big game hunting seasons.

Geology: This trail crosses several north/south trending faults that acted to drop Scad Valley nearly 1,000 feet lower than the surrounding mountains. This type of formation is known as a graben.

Special Considerations: The trail is in a travel restricted area (see Travel Map), and is limited to foot horse and bicycle use only. Cross-country skiing is possible (given good snow). Any drinking water obtained along the trail should be appropriately treated before use. The trailhead at Millers Flat is approximately 0.9 mile from the road at the spillway and requires that you traverse Scad Valley Creek. There is no bridge and the stream may be hazardous to cross during the spring runoff.
