Hiking - East Mountain Trail

This trail follows along the top of East Mountain between Mill Fork Canyon and Horse Canyon. It climbs 900 feet from Horse Canyon trailhead #076 (9500 feet) to the junction of Forest Development Road (FDR) #244 and Mill Fork Canyon Trailhead #171 (10,400 feet). Vegetation is primarily high elevation grass and sagebrush along with scattered Spruce/Fir stands. The trail tread is mineral to loose rocky soil and averages 18 inches wide.

Trail Data

Access: This trail can be traveled from about mid-June through October. The trail links Mill Fork Canyon and Horse Canyon. It can be used as a loop connection for these two trails or as a one-way trip across East Mountain to Scad Valley.

Trailhead: At terminus of FDR #244 along the top of East Mountain

Length: 4 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Travel Time: 3 hours

Suitability: Trail is suitable for foot, horse, mountain bikes and cross-country skiing.

Trail Ends: On East Mountain at the junction with Horse Canyon Trail approximately 1 mile from Scad Valley Road (FDR #014)

Additional Information

Recreational Opportunities: The trail provides panoramic views including Huntington Canyon, Gentry Mountain, and Skyline Drive. Wildlife that may be encountered include deer, elk and raptors. Trail use is light throughout the summer and moderate during the big game hunting seasons.

Geology: This trail runs along the crest of East Mountain primarily in the North Horn Formation (approximately 60-70 million years old). This formation consists of mudstone, sandstone and limestone. Fossilized snails, clams, fish, and plants can be found.

Special Considerations: This trail is in a travel restricted area (see Travel Map), and is limited to foot, horse, and bicycle use only. Lightning strikes during afternoon storms pose a hazard along the ridgetops. Any drinking water obtained along the trail should be appropriately treated before use.
