Abraham Lincoln Birthplace
National Historic Site

In the fall of 1808, Thomas and Nancy Lincoln settled on the 348-acre Sinking Spring Farm. Two months later on February 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin near the Sinking Spring. Here the Lincolns lived and farmed before moving to land a few miles away at Knob Creek. The area was established by Congress on July 17, 1916. An early 19th century Kentucky cabin, symbolic of the one in which Lincoln was born, is preserved in a memorial building at the site of his birth. The park contains 116.5 acres or approximately one-third of the original farm.

To reach the Abraham Lincoln National Historic Site from Mammoth Cave, take I-65 north to exit 81. The site lies about halfway between I-65 and the town of Hodgenville near the junction of Kentucky 84 and Kentucky 357.

Nolin Lake

Nolin Lake is the 5,795-acre main attraction at Nolin Lake State Park, just north of Mammoth Cave National Park. The lake is a favorite of boaters as well as fisherman, who catch bass, walleye, catfish, and crappie in the waters here. On the 333 acres of surrounding park land, visitors enjoy lounging on the beach, picnicking, and tent camping at the park's primitive campground.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park

South of Mammoth Cave off of US 31E, the Barren River Lake State Resort Park lives up to its name. The stately Louis B. Nunn lodge has 51 rooms and looks out over 10,000-acre Barren River Lake. Twenty-two private cottages with plenty of amenities hug the shoreline, and a 99-site campground accomodates those who'd rather rough it a little. The lake also features a marina, fishing, and swimming. On land, visitors can play 18 holes on the park's golf course or search for wildlife in the 2,000-acre hardwood forest.
