Directions: From Alamo, go S on FM 907 for approximately 7.5 miles. Go E on U.S. Highway 281 for approximately 0.25 mile to the Visitor Center entrance on S side of highway. Located at Santa Ana NWR.
Primary Wildlife: Two endangered cats: the ocelot and jaguarundi. Threatened and endangered bird species: the piping plover, Arctic peregrine falcon, and Aplomado falcon. Peripheral, tropical bird species (some of which are found nowhere else in the U.S.): the green jay, ring kingfisher, and Altamira oriole. Unique reptiles and amphibians: the reticulate collared lizard, Mexican burrowing toad, and speckled racer. A major migration route for numerous neotropical bird species passes through the Refuge.
Habitat: 63,000-plus acres (with an ongoing acquisition program) in the Matamoran brushland district of the Tamaulipan Biotic Province. Habitat types include: chaparral, sub-tropical gallery forests, salt lakes, palm jungles, tidal flats, salt marshes, sand dunes (lomas), Bordas escarpment, and savannahs.
Recreation and Education: Managed by Santa Ana NWR in conjunction with their Visitor Center and interpretive programs.
