7. Kettle Falls Hotel, Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota
Historic Kettle Falls Hotel is a fun place to stay in a true fisherman's paradise. The hotel, with 12 antique-furnished rooms, was built over a three-year period beginning in 1910 and sold by its owner in 1918, reputedly for $1,000 plus four barrels of whisky. Guests must utilize one of three community bathrooms. Meals, including walleye pike dinners, are served in an indoor dining room or on the screened porch. Walk a short distance down the gravel road and stand where voyageurs once portaged canoes. If community bathrooms are not acceptable, the hotel offers a series of nearby villas with private bathrooms. Some of the villas have kitchens. Season: May through mid-October; Rates: $60 for one, $20 for the second person; villas $160.
