9. Drakesbad Guest Ranch, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California
This isolated lodging complex in northern California offers accommodations in cabins, bungalows, and a rustic two-story lodge. The dinner bell rings to announce meals being served in the pine-paneled dining room. Guests can enjoy a hike, take a guided horseback ride, or relax in a swimming pool filled with naturally heated spring water. Equipment is provided for table tennis, volleyball, badminton, croquet, and horseshoes. There is even a canoe available for guests to use in a nearby pond. Fly-fishing for trout is excellent. Guests are treated as family members and everyone eats together in the rustic dining hall. We have found during our own stays that many families return year after year. Season: first Friday in June to the second Monday in October; Rates: $155 to $185 per person including meals. Discounts for weekly stays.
