2. Stovepipe Wells Village, Death Valley National Park, California
Most visitors to Death Valley choose to stay at the luxurious Furnace Creek Inn or the more family-oriented Furnace Creek Ranch. However, if you want a true desert experience, consider staying at Stovepipe Wells, a complex with the appearance of a small western town. Eleven buildings provide 83 guest rooms in three categories. A small swimming pool helps guests cope with desert temperatures. A general store, a small gas station, and a National Park Service visitor center are across the road. An attractive restaurant and saloon with vaulted ceilings and built with timbers of an old Death Valley mining operation offer a real western atmosphere. The complex is near a vast area of sand dunes. Season: year-round; Rates: $80 to $120.
