5. Rocky Knob Cabins, Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia
This small complex was constructed in 1941 and includes a registration office/manager's cabin, five rustic wooden buildings, and a central bathhouse. That's it. There is no swimming pool, spa, lobby, dining room, game room, or planned activities in this quiet and relaxing lodging complex. Two of the buildings are constructed as duplex units, for a total of seven rental cabins. Each cabin has two double beds and a kitchen with sink (cold water only), stovetop, and refrigerator. No eating facility is available at the cabins, but Mabry Mill, a well-known stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a short distance up the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is an especially good place for a family gathering. Season: late April to early November; Rates: $65 for one or two; slightly higher on holidays and in October.
