Lassen Volcanic National Park
Snow covers much of the park mid-October through mid-June. The Lassen Park Road (the main road that connects Highway 89) is usually closed late October through mid-June. During years of heavy snowfall, the road may open significantly later. Please call the park for road and condition updates. Many of the main park attractions are currently snow-covered and inaccessible by car and foot. The months of July, August, and September bring mostly sunny skies with warm daytime temperatures and cold nighttime temperatures.
The park is open year-round; however, access is difficult in winter and spring due to snow. The best time of the year to visit the park for hiking and car touring is in August and September. The best time of the year to visit for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is during January, February, and March. Snow covers the higher elevations into July. During heavy snow years, snow may remain through August. Please call park headquarters for road and condition updates. Campgrounds, trails, and roads may open late during years of heavy snowfall.
