Lake Meredith National Recreation Area

Camping

Lake Meredith has three general types of campgrounds reachable overland. The caprock campgrounds are situated on bluffs above the lake; the canyon campgrounds are located in canyons away from the lake; and the shoreline campgrounds are found along the lake shoreline. Some campgrounds at Lake Meredith are reachable only by boat.

Caprock Campgrounds

Sanford-Yake: Overlooking Lake Meredith near the marina, this campground is similar to the more traditional National Park Service campgrounds. Individual campsites have picnic tables, shade shelters, and grills. Sanford-Yake has one central comfort station with running water and flush toilets. Access to the lake shoreline is steep and difficult; however, a public boat launching ramp is located nearby. A trailer dump-station stands nearby on the approach road. Sanford-Yake generally has space available, but occasionally fills up during holiday weekends. Visitors have an excellent view of the lake from this high campground.

Fritch Fortress: This campground is located near the amphitheater approximately 3.5 miles outside of Fritch, Texas. Facilities and conditions are similar to those listed for Sanford-Yake except the Fritch Fortress campground is much smaller and there is no marina nearby. Fritch Fortress campground seldom fills up. There is an excellent view of the lake from this high campground.

Blue West: Blue West campground is on the north side of the lake off Highway 1913. Individual campsites have picnic tables and shade shelters. Blue West has no flush toilets or drinking water. An interim trailer dump-station is provided on the approach road. Access to the lake shoreline is difficult from this site; however, a public boat launching ramp is located nearby. Blue West campground is seldom full. There is an excellent view of the lake from this high campground.

Canyon Campgrounds

McBride Canyon: Nestled under large cottonwood trees are undeveloped sites. There are chemical toilets, picnic tables, and grills—no drinking water.

Rosita: Located along the Canadian River, Rosita is an off-road vehicle use area. There are chemical toilets, picnic tables, and grills—no drinking water.

Plum Creek: This area contains some large shade trees and is quite popular with hunters. There are chemical toilets, picnic tables, and grills—no drinking water.

Blue Creek Bridge: Another off-road vehicle use area; however, off-road vehicles are restricted to the creek bed of Blue Creek. There are chemical toilets, picnic tables, and grills—no drinking water.

Shoreline Campgrounds

Cedar Canyon: Cedar Canyon is a fairly small, sandy cove off the Sanford-Yake approach road. Campers set up along the beach area. There are no individual campsites. Some picnic tables are provided. A comfort station with running water and flush toilets is located in the boat ramp parking lot a short distance away. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited at Cedar Canyon. Expect crowded conditions on weekends and holidays, spring through summer.

Harbor Bay: Located just outside the community of Fritch, Texas, Harbor Bay is a large, open camping area with an expansive stretch of beach. Some picnic tables are provided, but there are no individual campsites. The access road is blacktop, but the camping area can become soft during rainy conditions. Chemical toilets are provided—there is no drinking water. The nearby public boat launching ramp is useable at lake depths above 80 feet. Expect large crowds on weekends and holidays, spring through summer.

Chimney Hollow: Located near the Blue West public boat ramp, this semi-developed campground has some picnic tables and chemical toilets—no drinking water. There are no individual campsites. Chimney Hollow is in the Blue Creek embayment and affords protection from prevailing south winds.

Bugbee: A popular location with shoreline fishermen, Bugbee is a semi-developed camping area with no individual campsites. Some picnic tables and chemical toilets are provided—no drinking water. This campground is crowded on weekends and holidays, spring through summer. The camping area beyond the blacktop road can be soft during rainy weather.

Spring Canyon: This campground has designated campsites with picnic tables, shade shelters, and chemical toilets—no drinking water. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited here. Swimming is popular at the shallow end of the Stilling Basin—no lifeguard service is provided. Spring Canyon experiences heavy day use on holidays and weekends from spring through summer.

Boat Accessible Camping

Sandy Point: Located on the upper south end of the lake, this site has a sandy beach and can be reached only by boat. There are no facilities.

Blue East: Located across from the Blue West boat ramp, there is a large sandy beach that is very popular with water skiers. There are no facilities. Recommend carrying portable toilet.

Keep in Mind
Camping at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is first come, first served and is limited to 14 days annually per visitor. Trailer hookups and showers are not available. There is no entrance or camping fee.

Pets must be on a leash; quiet hours must be maintained from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. and refuse must not be drained from trailers onto the ground.

Firewood can be gathered only if it is dead and on the ground. No trees or other plant materials should be cut or otherwise disturbed.
