Directions: From Rio Hondo, drive 17 miles E on FM 106, then three miles N on Buena Vista Road.

Primary Wildlife: Provides wintering and feeding areas for migratory waterfowl, and habitat for two species of endangered cats. Very high biological diversity including seven endangered species and 393 species of birds.

Recreation and Education: Wildlife observation and study, hiking on designated trails, and two designated auto tour routes. Visitor Center open daily from October through April, and weekends only in May. Camping and fishing available in Adolph Thomae, Jr. County Park.

Special Note: Laguna Atascosa NWR is one of the bird-watching "hot spots" in the United States. Many species not found outside the lower Rio Grande Valley. Eighty percent of the North American population of redhead ducks winter here.
