Although the Kisatchie is Louisiana's only national forest, Sabine and Angelina National Forests are located just west, past the Texas border. Homochitto National Forest is located to the east in Mississippi.
Louisiana does, however, feature a large variety of national wildlife refuges. Sabine, Cameron Prairie, and Lacassine National Wildlife Refuges are located south of the forest. Lake Ophelia and Grand Cote are located to the east, and D'Arbonne National Wildlife Refuge is north of the Kisatchie. The forest is a six-hour car ride from Baton Rouge and 45 minutes from Shreveport.
