Kaibab National Forest

Around the Forest

Where do the buffalo roam? You can watch a herd of buffalo wander through sagebrush and saltbush on 60,000 acres of shrub-grassland at House Rock Ranch. Charles C. "Buffalo" Jones was an Indian fighter, scout, mountain man, and buffalo hunter. True to his name he killed a great many buffalo, but unlike most of his contemporaries he realized the buffalo would disappear completely if efforts were not made to save the few remnant herds. Shortly after the establishment of the Grand Canyon Game Preserve in 1906, Jones acquired a small herd and brought it to the Kaibab Plateau, a land the species had never inhabited. Today, thanks to "Buffalo" Jones, you can observe the descendants of the original herd as they graze on the wide-open range. The buffalo ranch is located 21 miles south of US 89A in House Rock Valley and 41 miles from Jacob Lake.

The Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center is located at the intersection of US Highway 89A and AZ Highway 67 in Jacob Lake, Arizona. In Jacob Lake, you will find a variety of lodging, as well as restaurants, gift shops, and grocery stores. Another town that offers shops and services is Fredonia, Arizona—it is located just seven miles south of Kanab, Utah. Just across the Utah border, Bryce National Park and Zion National Park lure canyon visitors. And of course, the canyon of canyons—the Grand Canyon National Park—splits the Kaibab in two. The Kaibab is also near other national forests worth visiting including the Coconino, Prescott and Tonto.
