Worth the trip

To really appreciate a trek through the rain forest, staying cool is key. If you can't be beachside for your hike, heading toward a waterfall is a close second — lucky for you, Grenada has a number of scenic, refreshing cascades for your hiking pleasure.

Just two miles south of Grenville, on the east side of the island, lies Marquis (Mount Carmel) Waterfall — the largest and highest in Grenada. A gentle 30-minute trek brings hikers to a two-part cascade that tumbles a total of 70 feet.

Grenada's most popular waterfall destination, Seven Sisters, offers hikers a moderate, three-hour trek (round-trip) through virgin forest in Grand Etang. As you might expect, the trail leads to a series of seven gorgeous waterfalls, perfect for a cool dip. To go with a guide, contact Mandoo (473-440-1428; www.grenadatours.com) or Sunsation Tours (473-444-1594; www.grenadasunsation.com).

For a challenging hike (and a tranquil mid-hike swim), take on Grenada's waterfall trio — Concord, Au Coin, and Fontainbleu — located near the northwest edge of Grand Etang. After following the path to Mount Qua Qua for a good hour and a half, the trail branches off for another three-hour trek. It's steep and rocky in places, but some steps have been hewn and more are in the works, along with a helpful handrail; the trail is marked with yellow paint spots.

For something a little more adventurous, add pristine Victoria Falls to your itinerary; this cascade sits at the foot of Mount St. Catherine — Grenada's highest peak (2,756 feet). Hire a guide — Mandoo Tours will take you there by request — and get ready for some roped climbing.
