Hells Canyon National Recreation Area

Winter Sports

The Idaho trail system provides a great deal of diversity in both challenge level and terrain accessed.

With the exception of spring use on the Snake River National Recreation Trail, and fall hunting use, there is very little non-wilderness dispersed recreation use. Up to 90 percent of recreation use on the Idaho side of the Snake River is associated with the river itself, developed campgrounds, and viewpoints, or Hells Canyon Wilderness.

Hells Canyon supports approximately 82 miles of groomed snowmobile trail in close proximity to the Salt Creek snow park on Wallowa Valley District. Additional ungroomed routes are accessible from the main system with the primary play area located around McGraw. Cross-country skiing is light and takes place in ungroomed, unmarked areas. Strengths of the winter recreation resource are its vast unspoiled, uncrowded terrain and its beautiful views.
