Helena National Forest

Deerlodge National Forest is located just west of Helena. It features some great cross-country skiing at sites like Discovery, near Anaconda, and Maverick Mountain, near Dillon. Also in close proximity is the Lewis and Clark National Forest, just northeast of the Big Belt Mountains. This forest is comprised of a conglomeration of mountain ranges, including the Sawtooth, Highwood, Snowy, Castle, Little Belt, and Crazy Mountains, as well as the Front Range. Here you will find great hiking and backpacking in its two wildernesses, the Bob Marshall and the Scapegoat. Just south is Butte, Montana, which features gold rush attractions and many other points of interest.
