Classic Adventures: Backpack the Havasupai Land
By Tyler Williams

In the remote western end of Grand Canyon, there's a place where crystalline water gurgles up out of the desert rock and flows through an oasis of greenery. Along its course, it dashes down natural water slides, quietly sits in deep pools, and races over 100-foot waterfalls. This stream is called Havasu.

Tucked among the ancient cottonwood trees along Havasu Creek is the village of Supai, home of the Havasupai tribe. With a permit, the Havasupais will allow you to visit their Shangri-La, camp along the creek below the village, and swim beneath the waterfalls. Bring your hiking legs, because the only way out of Supai is by foot or mule.
