Grand Canyon National ParkSupai/Havasu Canyon
The Havasupai Indians once farmed many moist areas below the South Rim, including the area now known as Indian Garden. Today they occupy a 185,000-acre reservation inside the central canyon. More than 400 Havasupai live in Supai, a dusty village of mostly prefabricated buildings surrounded by red-rock cliffs. It can be reached only by riding a mule or by walking eight miles into the canyon. (Helicopters also transport goods, townspeople, and an occasional visitor.) The milky waters of Havasu Creek pass through the village, then plummet over a series of turquoise waterfalls, some of the prettiest anywhere. Between falls, the creek trickles past a shady campground (two miles past town), then continues an additional seven miles to the Colorado.
