- Gifford-Pinchot provides more than 1,100 miles of trails of varying difficulty. Most trails are located in upper-elevation forest and alpine areas. Trails range from the easy nature trails to a rugged portions of the Pacific Crest Trail.
- The Cowlitz Ranger District covers the southern portion of the forest and is popular due to its close proximity to Portland. The 1.4-mile Sleeping Beauty Trail is a relaxing walk in the woods, eventually heading upwards to an amazing lookout.
- Mount Adams, with its 12,276-foot summit, is the second-highest peak in Washington State. Climbing routes on the mountain range from the non-technical South Climb to highly technical routes that require advanced skills and special equipment.
- Mount St. Helens, an active volcano, is a popular climb for both beginner and experienced mountaineers. Late spring through early fall is the most popular time to climb here.
- Ape Cave, explored in the early 1950’s by a scout troop, was named in honor of the troop’s sponsor, the St. Helens Apes. The cave’s main entrance divides the cave into two sections, the upper cave and lower cave. The three-quarter-mile lower portion, which is the easier route, takes about one hour round-trip to complete.
